Discourse Community Map and response
Have you ever been in a social club before? How about a sports team? Or maybe even a student at a school? Well these are all examples of discourse communities. A discourse community is a group of individuals, such as a class, a family, and even a social group. In my life I summed up 4 discourse communities that I belong too, or am attempting to become a part of.
My Family is the first discourse community that I belong to. It is a group of people who all grew up from the same bloodline of family. The family is a whole bunch of individuals, from a bloodline that includes a father, mother, brothers, sisters and even cousins. Mostly everyone in the world belongs to their own family discourse community. In my family, we embrace both our ethnicities of being Mexican-American’s. We embrace both traditions and cultures of who we are. The goals set for a family are really learned through life lessons and the way your parents raise you. You want to grow up being a successful adult with good manners with a proper education. Maybe even have a family of your own also.
The second discourse community I’m involved in is my own social group of friends. Like everyone else I have my own close group of friends in which I met in high school. The reason for such a close group of friends was because we all played on our schools football team and got to know one another. I’d say to be in our group you would have to get to know all of the group and share similarities with each other. The writing part of this group is we were all students in high school and were told to write about each other’s friendship with each other. For us it’s kind of a closed group. But everyone has the chance to be in a closed group of friends.
The third discourse community I’m involved in is my schooling at the University of Texas at El Paso. The only thing you really need to do to become a student is have financial stability and have a decent test score to be enrolled in the university. This group is especially large for it includes students from El Paso, the rest of Texas, and the rest of the nation. About twenty thousand students attend here. Everyone’s goal in the university is to leave with vast knowledge of their certain major and a degree. You can choose from associates, bachelors, and even a master’s degree. The university also helps you prepare for your future career. The writing factor for college is all the essays due for the classes.
The fourth and final discourse community I am currently trying to join in the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at UTEP. In order to join the fraternity, I must go through a series of trials that will determine if I will become a member. Some of the trials is to do a rush week and attend all the rush events which will determine if you get a bid (invitation) to join the fraternity. The next step is to pledge for a semester and keep at least a 2.5 G.P.A to be eligible to be initiated. The goals of the fraternity to make “a man out of a man”. The group of the fraternity consists of males from ages 18-22. We must also be involved in one other club.
All in all, I love the discourse communities that I’m involved in. Even if someone does not believe they are a part of a group, they really are involved. There are just so many different discourse communities to name that it is impossible to not be involved in any of them. In the near future I will not regret the groups I’m in right now. But I look forward for the next step in life where I must enter a new discourse community.
